Its a student no-go and therefore a dive, literally they will kick you out if they expect student in you, or if you are educated. The food is also nasty. I'm serious don't even bother, even if you are desperate for a pint this is one of the worst pubs in the country.

I don't know why i bothered reviewing this place because it is a 1/10

I AGREE, THE FARMERS ARMS IS A PILE OF PISS!

The landlord of this pub is an ignorant, bad mannered, nasty piece of work, he doesnt know the meaning of customer relations, he makes the place a very uncomfortably place to be the food is bad and the ale is expensive. Dont even go there.

I agree with all the above comments, the landlord is not at all welcoming, how has he ran a business in this industry, for sometime now, so i am told, the brewery should get rid of him, he is not a good advertisement for their pubs.

I VISTED THIS PUB WITH MY FAMILY TO CELEBRATE A BIRTHDAY AND WE WERE EXPECTING FOOD, AS THEY ADVERTISE FOOD 12 TILL 9PM. WE ARRIVED AT 6.30PM VERY HUNGRY AND WERE GREETED BY A VERY RUDE AND AROGANT PERSON BEHIND THE BAR WHO INFORMED US THAT THEY WERE NOT SERVICING FOOD THE KITCHEN WAS CLOSED,WE DECIDED TO HAVE A DRINK AND MOVE ON TO FIND FOOD, WE ORDERED OUR DRINKS AND WERE THEN TOLD,WE DONT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS OR ANY PLASTIC,UPON THIS WE ALL LEFT LEAVING OUR DRINKS ON THE BAR AFTER BEING TOLD IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS TO GET OUT OF HIS PUB. OH! DEAR HE MUST BE THE LANDLORD WHAT A VERY NASTY PERSON WHY ADVERTISE WHAT YOU DONT GIVE. DO NOT GO THERE!!!!

The landlord of this pub is the worst person I have ever worked for, he is rude, highly bad mannered and very disrespectful, towards all his staff, he wants a few lessons in good manners, didnt anyone ever tell him that to earn respect you have to give respect, he doesnt know the meaning of it. Even the customers who pay his bills get the sharp end of his tongue, Why do people bother to go in, theres certainly not a welcome in the farmers arms, from the landlord, but he does have some good staff, who make it almost bearable, but they never stay employed by him for long they will not take his arrogant attitude and why should they. Hospitality isnt in the landlords vocabulary. Only go to the farmers arms if you wish to go home depressed.

I would like to confirm all the above comments about this pub, as i went in with a group of my friends to play a few games of pool. We had only just bought our drinks and were about to set the game up when a man appeared out of the kitchen and stood watching us. my mate got the balls out and was already placing them in the triangle when he shouted at him USE THE CLOTH, my mate didnt understand what he ment so he pushed him out of the way to show him, needless to say we didnt stay long and moved on to a more friendly pub not so far away from the farmers arms.
Students dont go there were not welcome.

I too worked for this asshole..he sacked me while i was off sick with a major illness.i took him to a tribunal and won..the rest of the staff were great and regulars that did come in always asked who was doing the cooking,if it was asshole they didnt stay..food has gone down hill since i left..infact every-thing has gone downhill..time is running out for him..tick-tock..

Having recently moved into the area to study,a group of friends decided to check out the local pubs. First we went to the Plough in Houghton Green, and got a very warm welcome, maybe you should do a study of this pub, we then proceeded to the Farmers Arms, having already been warned off from going there we thought we would check it out. We were served by a very nice young lady and proceeded to play a game of pool, we had, had a few games and the night roled on,then this woman who was obviously worst for ware decided to start dancing and singing, the bar staff told her to stop and she didnt, next this man came storming through the pub and told her to stop as he does not allow dancing and told her to go home, and the staff not to serve her, OK one would say but what he called this woman who we now no to be a regular after she had gone was beyond believe, you dont talk about people especially regulars like that it is discusting and so is he, one of my mates started laughing and we were then told in no uncertain terms to get out of his pub, in not a very polite way.We were not even allowed to finish our pints. Students and regulars DONT GO THERE.

I WORKED FOR THIS LANDLORD WHILST STUDYING AT PADGATE CAMPUS. HE USES STUDENTS AS THE MAIN PART OF HIS EMPLOYEES, BECAUSE HE LIKES TO BULLY THEM AND THEY DONT QUESTION HIM, AT LEAST NOT MANY OF THEM, I THINK HE WENT THROUGH 4 STAFF IN 3 WEEKS WHILST I WAS THERE, NEEDLESS TO SAY I DID NOT STAY LONG AND FOUND ENJOYABLE EMPLOYMENT IN ANOTHER OF THE LOCAL PUBS. HE MADE ME WAIT FOR MY WAGES TELLING ME THEY WERE NOT READY EVERYTIME I CALLED IN FOR THEM, YET THE OTHER STAFF HAD BEEN PAID. HE IS A TOTAL CONTROL FREAK, AND AN ARROGANT UNLIKEABLE MAN.

Dear matt and Kara. obviously you may have been going in the pub for many years, but do you really known this man, i mean really know him, he has many sides to him. The public only get to see one side, and sometimes even that is not the nicest side. i drink in the farmers every week and agree with all negative comments made.maybe its his age, all i know is he is a miserable get and he should be happy and grateful,his wife is young and a lovely person and still no smile ???????? most of the original regulars left long ago, every person in there seems afraid to say anything against him, why? i dont no.He is a reminder to me how i DONT want to end up....bitter and twisted and miserable.How sad really.

The Farmers Arms, excellent landlord, finest beer and service, won'stand any nonesence type of boss, never any trouble, just a great place to relax and enjoy the ambience.Come on don't be the "silent" majority.

Having up to three years ago been a regular for some 40 years and seen various landlords come and go I can confirm that Frank is by far the most arrogant, ignorant pathetic, devious, sarcastic, detestful, landlord you will ever come across. He is a verbal bully who thinks he is always right and loves to be sarcastic but will not take any crititism of his actions because he hates customers and their views. His actions have over the years split what was once a very close knit community where the majority of people would visit the pub on a regular basis to chat, play pool or bowls,or even a game of darts or dominoes,not now.Previous landlords would welcome students as would we all but alas all this is in the past, what a shame. I hate the bastard for many reasons but most of all for ruining a lovely pub. Ps I think bowler has lost his marbles because theirs no bowling there now
